This is my first for The Nation, a legendary 150 year old American magazine that boasts Hunter S Thompson, Martin Luther King and James Baldwin as former contributors.
This wasn’t just the longest magazine feature I’d ever written – 8,000 words – it also was slammed on the cover. I couldn’t be more thrilled, as this was my grandfather’s favourite magazine.
